Coded BIAS Movie Event 1: August 31st 2022 12:00pm-1:30pm EST Coded BIAS Movie Event 2: September 7th 2022 5:00pm-6:30pm EST Coded Bias Discussion: September 7th 2022 7:00pm-8:00pm EST The movie "Coded Bias", explores the fallout of MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini’s discovery that facial recognition does not see dark-skinned faces accurately, and her journey to push for the first-ever legislation in the U.S. to govern against bias in the algorithms that impact us all . Modern society sits at the intersection of two crucial questions: What does it mean when artificial intelligence increasingly governs our liberties? And what are the consequences for the people AI is biased against? When MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini discovers that many facial recognition technologies do not accurately detect darker-skinned faces or classify the faces of women, she delves into an investigation of widespread bias in algorithms. As it turns out, artificial intelligence is not neutral, and women are leading the charge to ensure our civil rights are protected. Join us for a discussion of the movie, its topics, and our own experiences on Wednesday, Sept 7, at 7pm. A link to the movie will be provided in advance so attendees can watch the movie, on their own time, prior to the discussion. Even if you can't make the discussion, sign up to watch the movie. IEEE PES @ GT – Burns & McDonnell
Come learn about engineering consulting and the electrical grid! Representatives will discuss current challenges, and how new technologies could create future solutions. Burns & McDonnell provides engineering, architecture, construction, environmental and consulting solutions. This event will feature the following representatives to discuss their roles and experience with the engineering consulting company: Francisco Arriaga Francisco Arriaga serves as an Assistant Electrical Engineer specializing in substation design, emphasizing in protection & control, physical design, and relay settings. With nearly 3.5 years of experience, Francisco helps lead teams for several large utilities in the Southeast, including Southern Company, Duke Energy, Dominion Energy, and Santee Cooper. During his time away from work, he enjoys mentoring students and serving as a voice for underrepresented groups. Ajinkya Patil Ajinkya Patil serves as Technical Advisory Consultant specializing in Distribution and Transmission planning. Ajinkya has spent nearly 4 years performing Distribution Planning studies for various Independent Owned Utilities (Eversource, AEP, Duke-Carolinas, Georgia Power) and for various co-op’s spread across the country. His work mainly involves performing simulation studies on the distribution and transmission systems to help utilities integrate new and upcoming technologies into their grid. During his time away from work, Ajinkya is a semi-professional table tennis player, avid hiker and enjoys cooking different cuisines. Evan Hopf Evan Hopf serves as an Assistant Department Manager for the Networks, Integration & Automation team in Atlanta and Chattanooga. Evan has five years of experience designing and deploying wired and wireless private networks for utilities and carriers. His technical areas of focus include MPLS, MW radio, DWDM, and SONET networks. In his free time, Evan enjoys running, reading, and fishing.
