Improving Energy Efficiency of the Transportation Sector: Practical Experiences from the New York City Case

April 18, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Transit systems, e.g. the subway and public buses, are substantial consumers of energy at any city. New York City (NYC) has set up an aggressive plan to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, namely the NYC Energy Plan. This plan mandates exploring opportunities for energy saving at all sectors, including the transportation sector. This talk summarizes the key findings and lessons learned of multiple projects that the presenter led, in collaboration with the utility company and public transportation authorities in NYC. These projects aimed at improving the energy efficiency of the subway system through effective recuperation of regenerative braking energy, and at increasing the number of electric vehicles and electric vehicle supply equipment in the city.
